Mogadishu, Somalia - In a concerted effort to strengthen food systems resilience and ensure sustainable agricultural development, the Somalia Food Systems Resilience Project (FSRP), in collaboration with the Federal Member States of Jubbaland, Southwest, and HirShabelle, has initiated a large-scale distribution of irrigation-certified seeds to farming communities residing along the riverine areas of Jubba and Shabelle.
This strategic initiative aims to revitalize the agricultural sector, enhance food production, and improve food security across the country. Through the distribution of 1,155 tons of high-quality seeds, the FSRP and its partners are directly supporting 30,000 farming households in these regions.
The seed varieties provided include maize, sesame, cowpeas, and a diverse range of vegetables, meticulously selected to suit the local climatic conditions and soil types. By equipping farmers with these improved seeds, the project seeks to increase crop yields, reduce reliance on imported food, and promote sustainable agricultural practices.
The distribution process is being meticulously coordinated to ensure equitable access to the seeds among the targeted farming communities. Agricultural extension officers are actively engaged in providing technical support, training, and guidance to farmers on proper planting techniques, irrigation practices, and post-harvest handling to maximize the benefits of the initiative.
This collaborative effort represents a significant milestone in addressing food systems challenges in Somalia. By empowering farming communities with improved seeds and knowledge, the FSRP and its partners are contributing to increased agricultural productivity, enhanced food availability, and improved livelihoods for thousands of Somali families.
The FSRP is committed to working closely with the Federal Member States and other stakeholders to strengthen the resilience of Somalia's food systems, promote sustainable agriculture, and ensure long-term food security for the nation.
